Make your own Quilt Icons

We use our computer every day we might as well make it look the way we want. Why not make your own icons. This article was inspired by one I read in PC World in Windows Tips by Scott Dunn called Make Your Own Icons. I've adapted it for quilters computers.

  1. Create or open a block design in your Windows drawing or Windows quilt design program such as Quilt Pro, Corel Draw etc... When you create the image try to reduce the detail as much as possible. An uncluttered icon looks best. You may also use images you find on the Internet such as the ones shown above instead of creating your own.

  2. Reduce the image until it is about 1/2" in size.

  3. Open Windows Paint program. With a new file, click the Image menu item and Select attributes. Select "Pels" for units, type 32 for both width and height and click OK.

  4. Move back to the drawing program, select the image, Copy to the clipboard.

  5. Move back to Windows Paint & Paste the image. If prompted by the program to enlarge the bitmap click yes.. If the image was increased greatly, check attributes to see the size of the new image. If the image is much larger than 50 X 50 pels use the stretch & skew to reduce the size of the image to at most 50 X 50 pels (32 X 32 is better but the image can lose it's definition when it is too small)

  6. To edit the image you may zoom in to make changes.

  7. When finished editing the image, select Save As from the File menu. Choose the location where you want to save the file. In the File Name box type in a name in double quotation marks and use the ico extension like this: "myicon.ico".

  8. To change your shortcut's icon right click the shortcut and choose properties from the menu. Click the shortcut tab and click Change Icon. Locate the icon you just created and click Ok until you've closed all the dialog boxes. There you go! you now have a new Icon for your Shortcut.

Cool Quilting Images

I was surfing the Internet looking for some cool quilting sites to link up to I found some really nice icons and graphics that I thought you might like to see. I will add more as I get permission to do so. You can download these graphics from here by placing your mouse over the image and right mouse click on it. From the menu select "save image as". This will allow you to save the image to your hard disk. If you use the images on a web site be sure to request permission from the maker first. Also, please do not add a link from your page to the image on this site as it may be moved and your page will show up with a broken image.

These were some of my favorites from Tooru's page but there are more!

We had a link to Tooru's page, but it appears that it has moved.   If anyone knows where to locate him again, please let us know.

Although not quilting related, I liked this little cutie at this site but beware as there is adult oriented material here.
